چکیده

We show that it appears possible for starburst galaxies, like the nearby NGC 253, recently identified as a TeV source by the CANGAROO collaboration, to emit a significant amount of high-energy γ-rays and neutrinos through hadronic processes in their cores. We suggest that proton illumination of the inner winds of massive stars can be a viable mechanism for producing TeV γ-rays and neutrinos without a strong MeV-GeV counterpart. The rich stellar content of the starbursts, with millions of early-type stars concentrated in the central regions, where collective effects of the stellar winds and supernovae can produce a significant enhancement of the cosmic ray density, provides an adequate scenario for TeV γ-ray generation. Close starbursts are also found to be potential sources for km-scale neutrino telescopes, like ICECUBE, within reasonable integration times. Can high energy neutrino annihilation on relic neutrinos generate the observed highest energy cosmic-rays?

Annihilation of high energy, ∼ 10eV, neutrinos on big bang relic neutrinos of ∼ 1eV mass, clustered in the Galactic halo or in a nearby galaxy cluster halo, has been suggested to generate, through hadronic Z decay, high energy nucleons and photons which may account for the detected flux of > 10eV cosmic-rays. We show that the flux of high energy nucleons and photons produced by this process is ...

Galactic sources of high energy neutrinos

The undisputed galactic origin of cosmic rays at energies below the so-called knee around 10eV implies an existence of a nonthemal population of galactic objects which effectively accelerate protons and nuclei to TeV-PeV energies. The distinct signatures of these cosmic accelerators are high energy neutrinos and γ-rays produced through hadronic interactions. While γ-rays can be produced also by...

Multimessenger search for point sources: ultra-high energy cosmic rays and neutrinos

The origin of ultra-high energy cosmic rays (UHECRs) and neutrinos is still a mystery. Hadronic acceleration theory suggests that they should originate in the same sources (astrophysical or cosmological), together with gammarays. While gamma-rays have been linked to astrophysical sources, no point source of UHECRs or neutrinos have been found so far. In this paper, the multimessenger combinatio...

Microquasar LS 5039: a TeV gamma-ray emitter and a potential TeV neutrino source

The recent detection of TeV γ-rays from the microquasar LS 5039 by HESS is one of the most exciting discoveries of observational gamma-ray astronomy in the very high energy regime. This result clearly demonstrates thatX-ray binaries with relativistic jets (microquasars) are sites of effective acceleration of particles (electrons and/or protons) to multi-TeV energies. Whether the γ-rays are of h...

The Starburst Contribution to the Extra-galactic Γ-ray Background

Cosmic ray protons interacting with gas at the mean density of the interstellar medium in starburst galaxies lose energy rapidly via inelastic collisions with ambient nuclei. The resulting pions produce secondary electrons and positrons, high-energy neutrinos, and γ-ray photons. We estimate the cumulative γ-ray emission from starburst galaxies and find a specific intensity at GeV energies of νI...
